After four months of a long hard journey, the two families separate at Fort Hall; one family goes to Oregon and the other family goes to California. ______

They take a lot of food for the journey: corn meal to make bread or cakes, beans, dried bacon, rice, salt and dried fruit. The tools they take are necessary for cutting trees (saws, axes) and they need hammers and nails for building houses. They also need rifles and ammunition for hunting animals. They also take some furniture, like a rocking chair ,a grandfather clock ,a spider skillet and an iron.______

During the journey the men drive the wagons, they make decisions, they hunt and trap animals, they kill the buffalo for meat, they stand guard. The women sew and mend clothes, prepare and cook the food, they write in a diary, they wash the clothes and the dishes and they help other women and children. The children help their parents, they gather herbs and berries. ______

The story is about a family of pioneers, the Weavers, who leave their home in Cumberland, Maryland. The father decides to leave because life is too hard and the land in the West is more fertile. ______

At Independence Missouri the Weaver family meet other people in the caravan: the Smith family, with their children Mary, Tom and Elizabeth, the preacher and his wife, the Indian guide, the mountain man, the two aunts Prudence and Constance, the trader and the doctor. They also receive information about the journey and the weather and they buy medicines for fever. ______

Three children find a diary in an attic in an old trunk. They read it. ______

During the journey many things happen: Tom Smith becomes ill, Samuel Weaver has his tooth out, the Smith family lose their wagon, but the Weavers give them hospitality. Uncle John and Aunt Constance get married by the Preacher and everyone dances and celebrates. ______
